Products Description
Fast-acting tanning ingredient
Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a three carbon sugar derived from biotechnology, contains a carbonyl group (R-CHO) in its structure. This carbonyl group can undergo a Maillard reaction (carbonyl amine condensation, like the reaction that browns food when cooking) with the free amino groups (-NH₂) of keratin in the stratum corneum of the skin. The reaction produces brownish melanoidin pigments that deposit on the surface of the stratum corneum, thereby giving the skin a natural tan appearance.
The color produced by DHA is strictly cosmetic and temporary. Unlike UV tanning, it does not damage the DNA of skin cells or require exposure to harmful UV radiation.

Due to its low molecular weight, DHA can initiate the Maillard reaction and take effect at a faster rate.
The following results were observed after a single application of a 5% UNIBIO_DHA gel product.

The color develops gradually over a period of 4 to 6 hours after application. The "tan" typically lasts 6 days before it begins to fade.
It fades naturally as the skin sheds its dead cells, which is why exfoliation is often recommended before application to ensure an even fade.
The application of DHA in hair coloring products is also a growing trend.
Traditional oxidative hair dyes can damage hair keratin and impair hair quality.
DHA, as a non-oxidative hair dye, is gentle on the hair and does not irritate the scalp. It can be used in combination with oxidative hair dyes and allows users to achieve the desired color with long-lasting results, while also reducing damage to the hair.
When used alone, UNIBIO_DHA produces a brownish-yellow hair color as shown in the below figure. This makes it ideal for users looking to change their hair color and appearance in a short time.

Also, the SCCS(the EU's Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety) concluded that there are no objections to the use of DHA as a hair dye in non-oxidative products up to a concentration of 6.25%. Even the combined use of a leave-on hair dye with a DHA content of up to 6.25% and a self-tanning product with up to 10% DHA was considered safe.
