What is Skin Longevity?

First, we're all familiar with the concept of longevity—everyone wants to live longer. Today, however, attention has shifted to the idea of "healthspan." In medicine, healthspan refers to the number of years a person remains in good health, not just the number of years they are alive—what we call "healthy aging."

In the world of beauty, skin longevity means extending the duration during which your skin functions at its best, keeping it healthy, radiant, resilient, and vibrant at any age.

One reason this concept has gained traction is the changing demographics and shifting approaches to skincare. On one hand, with an aging population, people want to look their best—but not necessarily to look 18 again. What they want is glowing, luminous skin and skin cells that function efficiently. On the other hand, younger generations are more prevention-minded. They're using skincare products earlier than ever before—not to repair damage, but to prevent it from happening in the first place.


How can we achieve Skin Longevity?

This is a comprehensive strategy aimed at maintaining the skin's physiological functions and youthful appearance throughout life. It goes beyond addressing external signs and instead focuses on supporting the skin at the cellular level, enhancing its biological processes, and preserving its youthful state.

Skin aging is not entirely determined by genetics; it is largely driven by lifestyle and environmental factors—oxidative stress, pollution, UV radiation, and diet, etc. Since part of aging is extrinsic, it is within our control.

To achieve skin longevity, we first need to understand the hallmark features and drivers of skin aging. Longevity science has been evolving for years, and in 2025, scientists summarized 14 hallmarks and drivers of skin aging, as shown in the figure below. These features can be divided into four major categories: primary hallmarks (the root causes), antagonistic hallmarks (responses to damage), integrative hallmarks (the functional consequences), and psychosocial isolation.

1. Primary hallmarks (the root causes)

Genomic instability and telomere attrition

UV radiation and oxidative stress continuously damage skin cell DNA and shorten telomeres in epidermal and dermal cells, leading to a progressive decline in skin regenerative capacity and a reduction in the number of newly generated healthy skin cells.

Epigenetic alterations and loss of proteostasis

External stimuli alter gene expression in skin cells, accelerating the breakdown of collagen and elastin while impairing their normal repair. This results in the loss of dermal support structure, causing facial sagging and laxity.

Disabled macroautophagy

Skin cells are unable to autonomously clear metabolic waste, leading to the accumulation of dead keratinocytes and oxidative debris, which causes dullness, yellowing, and roughness of the skin.


2. Antagonistic hallmarks (responses to damage)

Mitochondria are the cell's energy factories. When skin mitochondria are damaged, cells suffer from insufficient energy supply, causing the skin to lose its translucent radiance and become prone to dryness and fatigue. At the same time, large amounts of oxidative free radicals leak out, causing further damage.

Cellular senescence

Damaged skin cells—senescent cells—are unable to undergo normal apoptosis and accumulate in the dermis, continuously releasing aging signals and promoting the formation of static wrinkles. These senescent cells also secrete large quantities of cytokines, chemokines, growth factors, and proteases. When these signals spread to surrounding healthy young skin cells, they can gradually drive those cells into senescence as well.

Deregulated nutrient-sensing

Cells lose the ability to precisely absorb nutrients, meaning that even the finest and most expensive skincare ingredients struggle to be effectively taken up and deliver results.


3. Integrative hallmarks (the functional consequences)

Chronic inflammation and Dysbiosis

Chronic skin inflammation is the core driver of sensitivity, telangiectasia (redness/spider veins), and premature aging. Dysbiosis exacerbates skin inflammation, triggering recurrent breakouts and roughness.

Stem cell exhaustion and Extracellular matrix changes

The vitality of skin stem cells declines, impairing the continuous regeneration of healthy cells. Concurrently, extracellular matrix (ECM) components are lost, leading to enlarged pores and a loss of skin softness and elasticity.

Altered intercellular communication

Signal transmission among cells across different skin layers is disrupted, compromising barrier repair and collagen synthesis mechanisms. As a result, the skin's self-repair capacity deteriorates, making it vulnerable to damage and accelerated aging even with mild irritation.


4. Psychosocial isolation

These is the upstream trigger of all aging pathways, and also the key reason why many people find their skincare ineffective. Chronic loneliness, anxiety, and emotional suppression disrupt hormonal balance and inflammatory levels in the body, directly activating the full cellular senescence program—which is then reflected in the skin. For example, stress hormones compromise the skin barrier and accelerate collagen breakdown; persistent emotional homeostasis imbalance exacerbates underlying chronic inflammation, triggering redness, hyperpigmentation, and premature skin aging.
